Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone is located in Western Africa and borders the North Atlantic Ocean. It also borders Liberia and Guinea. English is the official language of Sierra Leone, however there are several other languages spoken in Sierra Leone on a regular bases: Mende, Temne, and Krio. Sierra Leoneans rely primarly on mining (mostly diamonds) and agriculture for its economic base, and has the third largest natural harbor in the world.

After the Civil War in 1991 to 2002, that resulted in thousands of deaths and the displacement of about 2 million people, Sierra Leone is slowly re-establishing their democracy.

The new government is working to futher the development of the country, create jobs, and to get rid of all endemic corruption.

President of the Amistad Committee, Alfred L. Marder was awarded the Honor of the Rokal, the highest civilian honor of the Sierra Leonean Goverment by His Excellency, President of Sierra Leone, Ahmad Tejan Kabbah. It was the first time the Medal was presented outside Sierra Leone. The ceremony took place at the Omni Hotel in New Haven, Connecticut on September 21, 2001.

The National Anthem

High we exalt thee, realm of the free;

Great is the love we have for thee;

Firmly united ever we stand,

Singing thy praise, O native land.

We raise up our hearts and our voices on high,

The hills and the valleys re-echo our cry;

Blessing and peace be ever thine own,

Land that we love, our Sierra Leone.

One with a faith that wisdom inspires,

One with a zeal that never tires;

Ever we seek to honour thy name,

Ours is the labour, thine the fame.

We pray that no harm on thy children may fall,

That blessing and peace may descend on us all;

So may we serve thee ever alone,

Land that we love, our Sierra Leone.

Knowledge and truth our forefathers spread,

Mighty the nations whom they led;

Mighty they made thee, so too may we

Show forth the good that is ever in thee.

We pledge our devotion, our strength and our might,

Thy cause to defend and to stand for thy right;

All that we have be ever thine own,

Land that we love, our Sierra Leone.

The flag of Sierra Leone  was adopted on April 27, 1961 when Sierra Leone gained independence from Britain. The green stripe represents agriculture, the country's natural wealth and its mountains. The white stripe stands for justice and unity of the People. While the blue stripe represents the Atlantic Ocean and the harbor of Freetown, the country's capital.
